Denis Kozhukhin releases debut album and performs Prokofiev cycle in Tokyo

This month, Denis Kozhukhin releases his debut recording with Onyx Classics. The album features Prokofiev’s Piano Sonatas Nos. 6, 7 and 8, which have become known as the ‘War Sonatas’.

For Kozhukhin, these pieces: “reflect probably some of the darkest moments of a human life, moments when your life and the lives of others can be destroyed at any moment… unfortunately, with all the horrors of the past, this music and its message even today remains very real. But it also speaks of eternal things like human courage, conscience, a will to live and create life, to repair something destroyed, to love even when there is not much hope. Through his own view of life and history, Prokofiev as a great artist has created these works that will always remain as a monument to our own mistakes.”

Kozhukhin will perform the complete cycle of Prokofiev piano sonatas in Tokyo later this month at the Musashino Civic Cultural Hall (26 and 27 January) and will again perform the ‘War Sonatas’ at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, on 12 May 2013 as part of the Southbank Centre’s The Rest is Noise festival.
